World Championships Wheelchair Rugby 2026 in Sao Paulo is starting!
The Wheelchair Rugby World Championships is about to start, the waiting is finally over. While the 2022 World Championship was held in Europe (Denmark), this time it will be taking place in South America (Brazil). In Sao Paulo, 12 countries will compete for the title of World Champion. Since 1995, eight world championships have been organized, and the 9th title tournament will take place in Sao Paulo from Monday 17 August until Sunday 23 August 2026. Australia has managed to reach the final no less than 4 times (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022) and is again one of the favourites for the gold in Sao Paulo.
The 12 participant countries are divided into 2 pools and will therefore play 5 matches before preparing for the final rounds. Australia, as the number 2 on the World Rankings list, has been placed in the pool with CAN-6, BRA-7, NED-13, USA-3, and NZL-10. In the other pool, DEN-8, GBR-4, COL-11, GER-9, JPN-1, and FRA-5 are playing their matches. In total, 11 of the top 12 countries on the World Ranking List are present in Brazil. Only Switzerland (number 12 on the World Ranking list) is missing, and in its place, the Netherlands has managed to qualifying for the World Cup again since 2006.
The Australian Wheelchair rugby team will start the tournament on 17 August against Canada at 16.00 local time. Tuesday 18 August New Zealand will be the next opponent in the match starting at 11.00. Wednesday 19 August the next match will start at 19.30 local time against host country Brazil. On Thursday 20 August 2 matches will be played. At 11.30 local time it is against USA and their last match is against The Netherlands, which starts at 17.30 local time.
From Friday 21 August the final rounds will be played and Sunday 23 August the final will be starting at 16.30 local time.
All the matches can be watch by live stream on the YouTube channel of World Wheelchair Rugby. The time difference with Sao-Paulo and Melbourne is 13 hours.
